From Las Vegas to Lenoir City

For Mark and Shannon Schumm, moving to Tennessee wasn’t just about changing scenery—it was about building a home where their family could truly come together.

The Schumms, both retired educators, made the move from Las Vegas to Lenoir City after finishing their final years in the classroom. Their children were also moving to Tennessee—one attending Tennessee Tech and the other pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Tennessee. When Shannon also secured a position in education at UT, it became clear: the family’s heart was in the Volunteer State.

During their transition, Shannon moved to Knoxville first, staying with her sister and brother-in-law in Tennessee. Mark stayed behind in Las Vegas to wrap up the school year while their daughter completed her undergraduate degree in California. Despite being spread across the country, the family kept a strong connection—FaceTiming regularly until they could all be together again.

A Home That Brings Everyone Together

When it came time to settle down, the Schumms knew exactly what they needed: a home with space for their adult children to visit or live at home if needed, room for family gatherings, and a community that felt welcoming but not too busy. Shannon’s sister already lived nearby, making the Farmstead community even more appealing.

They were drawn to the idea of single-level living with a spacious lot—not too big, not too small—and plenty of space between neighbors, a contrast to the tightly packed homes they had experienced in Las Vegas. While they initially weren’t planning to build, they realized it was the best way to get what they wanted within their price range.

Designing Their Dream

Using Turner Homes’ online tools, Mark and Shannon explored available lots and floor plans, ultimately selecting the Balsam plan—a single-level home with an open-concept living space, a generous primary suite, and room to personalize. They especially loved being able to visualize exterior finishes and colors before making their final selections.

Their design meeting was scheduled to coincide with a family weekend visit to their son’s school, making the process smooth and efficient. With the guidance of Turner Homes’ in-house designer, they made all their design decisions in one session—no juggling subcontractors or second-guessing. They chose features that fit their lifestyle, including a 3-car garage, added storage, and an extended back deck.

Construction began in January, and the process was seamless. Their community sales manager kept them updated regularly, and Shannon’s sister captured photos along the way—later used to create a keepsake album documenting their build from the ground up.

More Than a House

The home was completed right on schedule in June, just in time for everyone to be together again. Now, the Schumms are now settling in, looking forward to the comfort of routine and the joy of having their family under one roof.

“To us, it’s more than just a house,” they shared. “It’s a place where each of us can feel at home. A place that gives our grown kids space to feel like it’s theirs too. It’s all of us, making it home together.”

At Farmstead, the Schumms found more than just the right floor plan—they found their place.
